On 17th February 1979, 2 Chinese companies attacked Vietnamese position at No 4 bridge, Kim Tan area of the town of Lao Cai. The bridge was protected by 8 Vietnamese : 5 border police and 3 militias, commanded by Do Van Hoa. They fired fiercely with a heavy machine gun and AK-47s. Many Chinese troops were killed and wounded by mines and the HMG. So they had to retreat. Do Van Hoa found a Chinese HMG. He killed users and destroyed the gun.
A few hours later, Chinese sent 3 scouts to reconnoitre. Hoa and 2 Vietnamese soldiers, Thiep and Hue decided to captured the scouts. But the Chinese fleed. Hoa fired accurately, killed all 3 scouts. Hoa, Thiep, Hue captured the weapons, radio transmiter and returned to their trench to wait for the Chinese.
2 other scouts were also discovered by Vietnamese. They were killed while trying to escape.
After lost 5 scouts, the Chinese stopped attacking.
At 2h00 PM, Vietnamese troops saw 2 Chinese trucks. They opened fire with HMG and RPG-2. The trucks were destroyed and some Chinese were killed.
At 6h00 PM, 3 Chinese scouts tried to break into Vietnamese trench. 2 were killed by Vietnamese while the 3rd fleed and stayed in a hole which Vietnamese digged to counter air strike. Hue run after the scout. He thew a grenade into the hole, the Chinese fired against and shot him dead. Hoa throw a grenade but the Chinese continued firing. Hoa was angry, he fired a RPG-2 round, destroyed the hole and killed the Chinese scout.
On that day, Hoa and his troops killed 100 chinese troops, destroyed 2 trucks and captured sereval weapons. They lost 1 men.
